The largest Romanian IXP is Interlan . Funny enough, Interlan is a response of the smaller ISPs to the other big Romanian IXP, Ronix. Because 3 years ago joining Ronix was a complicated affair, a few small companies decided to take matters into their own hands. Currently, Interlan has 3 times more traffic than Ronix.
A funny thing about IXPs: often, an IXP’s name is formed from the 3-letter code of the city in which it resides, plus the “IX” suffix. For example, Amsterdam IXP is called AMSIX. Thus, RONIX was first called BUCIX
After they realized that BUCIX doesn’t sound so good in Romanian, they renamed it to RONIX.
Alex there was (or still is, I have to check this) a BUCIX! The original name is BuhIX ( your explanation fits perfectly here). This IXP was active in the dark age, late 1990s, and it provided mainly private peering services. You can still see the fossilized webpage : http://www.buhix.ro/index.htm . Notice the fancy Frontpage template and the cool ASCII art matrix.
